5. Weekly Go Green Tips 3 in 1 ( 27/6/2011 ~ 03/7/2011 ) ~ Car Fuel Consumption

Tips 13 :
Tape a sign to your car dashboard reminding the driver to check tire pressure during the first week of each month, check when the tires are in cold condition.  On average, tires lose about 1 psi for every 10 degree drop in its temperature. Underinflated tires increased the drag force between the tire and road surface, thus required more engine power to run on the same speed and increased fuel consumption. Besides, the increase drag force also caused the tire easily get bald, shorten its life.

But don’t over-inflate them too, as this reduces road grip of tire especially when the drive speed increased and thus caused risk injuries or fatalities. Inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you are unsure the correct tire inflation for your car, do consult the car's operator manual or ask your tire dealer. Improper inflation is the main cause of premature tread loss and sudden tire failure, according to tire industry experts

Avoid from drive on bald tires too! Besides being unsafe, they also increase fuel consumption and risk of injuries or fatalities. Tire tread provides the gripping action and traction preventing a vehicle from slipping and sliding. In general, tires are not safe and should be replaced when the tread is worn down to 1/16th of an inch. Do consult your workshop mechanic for the guidance.

Tips 14 :
If you're not travelling further than a mile today, leave your car in the garage. Walking is good for your health unless your doctor has told you not to walk much. In order to keep fit or healthy, you should walk at least 10,000 steps a day.

Monitor your vehicle weekly or monthly fuel consumption. Record down the amount of fuel you fill in and compare it with the mileage you do, with the previous period’s data. If you notice something unusual in the fuel consumption, consult your mechanic for further inspection or maintenance.

Tips 15 :
When you choose your next car, be sure to check the miles per gallon or liter to see how efficient your car will be, this not only helps the environment but it saves you money on fuel too. If your new car gets 100 miles per gallon instead of 50, and you drive 20,000 miles per year, you'll help to reduce your annual CO2 emissions by 4,400 pounds as well.

If you're serious about cutting costs, consider an alternative of biodiesel and bioethanol which are more efficient. You can also get your engine converted to run on liquid petroleum gas (LPG), which costs less than unleaded or diesel. Electric and hybrid vehicles are another eco-friendly way of driving. Most are grouped into the lower car tax bands so you’ll save money there as well as on your usual petrol costs. But the main problem with electric vehicles is that, to date, they’ve been able to only go so far on battery power. Charges on most last just around hundred or so and it takes hours for recharging compared to gassing or fuelling up that take minutes only.

For hybrid cars, with side-by-side electric and gas motors that work together never need to be plugged in and instead use the motions of its gas-powered engines to maintain the car batteries charged at all times. Nowadays, the ‘plug-in” hybrid is also available. By adding the ability to charge up from a standard household outlet, typically overnight, they relegate the gas engine to backup status and instead let the electric motor do most of the work and thus are more environmentally friendly. Moreover, plug-in hybrids recharged from rooftop solar power systems might come close to being the world’s first mass-market “zero emission” vehicles, requiring no power from the grid at all.
