12. Weekly Go Green Tips 3 in 1 ( 22/August/2011 ~ 28/August/2011 )

Tips 34:
Use latex gloves when washing dishes or applying the cleaning liquids. By naked hands will surely cause damage or even corrosive effect to the skin at certain extent. Green concept is not something that just involved the thing or environment surrounding us, but also includes the own self-care on personal body health.

Soak very dirty dishes before you wash them. Put a plug in and fill your sink with soapy water. After a half an hour soaking it will be much easier to wash them and will consume less water.

Tips 35:
Only fill the bathtub as much as you need. Bathing babies, small children and pets requires much less water. Filling a bathtub uses a fixed volume of water. Reducing the flow rate has no impact on the amount of water used for a bath. Water volume is a key point.

Make sure that your bathtub drain plug doesn’t leak. Replace the plug or plug washer if necessary.

Don’t let the used bathtub water go down the drain! Reuse bath water outdoors on your landscape if it is possible to do so. Bathtub water may not be useful water on all types of landscape as high concentrations of phosphates, nitrates and boron from soap may harm sensitive plant types such as citrus.

Tips 36 :
Each time you turn on a water faucet use the lowest pressure necessary. Keep the water turned on only while it is needed (Turn off the water while soaping up or shampooing). Check for and repair leaks in the tub diverter valve.

Replace existing tap or shower heads with the lower flow product in your bathrooms. Install a water-efficient showerhead that uses 2.5 gallons/minute or less. Shower heads with a mist setting let you reduce water flow even further. Low-flow taps and shower heads can save 20% of water without even influence our shower habits. Low-flow fixtures mix water with air and although less water is used, the flow has its usual power with the same efficiency.

Reminder:
Assign someone do regular check on the water tag, water pipe leak condition and repair accordingly.

11. Weekly Go Green Tips 3 in 1 (08/August/2011 ~ 14/August/2011)

Only 3% of the earth's water is fresh water. Fresh water degradation is a looming crisis that we must face head on with strong and effective actions. Please protect this precious resource by adopting sustainable water practices.

Tips 31 :
Set goals to reduce your monthly water consumption --- for example, commit to using 10% less per month. Once a month, record and review the new usage figure and make adjustments on the consumption as needed to reach your goals. All these information allowing you to gauge the impact of actions you take to reduce your water consumption.

Besides, encourage family members to get active involved in finding new ways to conserve the home water, by giving them some allowance from the amount saved from the previous month water-save activities.

Tips 32:
Be sure to turn off the faucet/tap while you are shaving or brushing your teeth or place a basin or bowl under the faucet/tap to catch the water and use it to water plants or add it to your grey water recycling system or use it to flush your drain system, if applicable.

Similarly, wash your fruit and veg under running water but in a way that you catch the water in a bowl and reuse it on your landscape or add it to your grey water recycling system.

Tips 33 :
Tape signs near water tag or water outlets reminding family members to turn off water when they leave a wash room or after the washing / cleaning use, e.g. shorter showers, turning the faucet off when not needed, only watering outdoor plants in the morning or evening. Also, rotationally assign someone do regular check on the water tag leak condition.

Common sources of leaks are a toilet that is running, a constant drip in a sink or outdoor faucet sink, a loose or dripping washer connection, a home water treatment unit, an evaporative cooler unit, or a sprinkler system.

9. Weekly Go Green Tips 3 in 1 ( 25/July/2011 ~ 31/July/2011 )

Tips 25 :
1. Avoid pans with Teflon, molybdenum or synthetic coating. Making such cookware involves extra energy, coating particles can end up in your kidneys and it can also potentially give toxic emissions. There's nothing wrong with a simple stainless steel pan.
2. Match your cookware with the size of the cooking ring. Too small a pan on a too big a ring will consume extra energy.
3. Use the so-called stack-up cookware i.e. two or more pans on top of each other. By powering just one cooking ring you'll cook two or more meals.
4. Choose cast-iron cookware or pans with heavy steel bottoms. Those will keep the heat better and you will be able to turn the flame a little down and still cook with the same results.
5. Always put a lid on your pan to reduce the heat loss. It will save energy. When using the stove, make sure the burner fits the pan, an uncovered burner wastes heat.

Tips 26 :
1. Forget about the grill. Use an electric toaster to make toasts or even give up the habit of toasting. Burnt food may contain carcinogens.
2. A gas cooker will consume relatively less energy but if you have an open-plan layout or poor ventilation, go for an electric cooker because gas cookers produce direct emissions.
3. Learn to operate your cooker. Adjust the heat in order to maintain steady and moderate cooking/boiling. Violent boiling will consume unnecessary energy and make the food less tasty.
4. Think twice before buying a kitchen extractor. You can ventilate your house by opening the windows. If you decide to install an extractor, switch it off one it has finished doing its job.

Tips 27 :
1. In term of energy conservation, use microwave heat food much more efficiently than standard oven and stove tops. Microwave doesn’t require preheating nor do they take as long to cook food. But be concern of the utensil or plate that used to place the food before put into the microwave. Don’t use plastic, Styrofoam to reheat any leftovers food. Put your food on microwave-safe glass or ceramic dishes instead, which they retain heat better.
2. Use as small an oven as possible. The larger the oven, the more energy it take to heat it to the proper temperature. Ovens are made to keep heat inside, so you can turn off the oven before the timer goes off, and your food will continue to cook or heated up.

8. Weekly Go Green Tips 3 in 1 ( 18/July/2011 ~ 24/July/2011 ) ~ Air-Con

Tips 22 : Air-Con
In the Summer-
(a)  Reduce your air-con operating time by just one hour, you help to reduce the carbon about 0.620kg and save 2.5% on electricity bill.
(b)  Raise your air-con thermostat by just one degree, you help to reduce the carbon about 0.187kg and save 3% on electricity bill. Keeps air-con setting at 78F degree, this is the comfortable range for most of the people to have a good night sleep.

In the Winter-
(a)  Be careful not to overheat or overcool the rooms. Lower the heating temperature by one degree in the winter and save 5% on your heating bill.
(b)  Set your thermostat at 68F degrees in daytime, and 55F degrees at night. This is the comfortable range for most of the people to have a good night sleep.

Tips 23 :
Clean or replace air-con’s air filters regularly follow the instruction found on the packaging. Energy is lost when air-con and hot-air furnaces have to work harder to draw air through dirty filters. Important too to ensure that your air filter is fits properly and air is moving through it and not around it. Cleaning a dirty air conditioner filter can save 5 percent of the energy used and could save 175 pounds of CO2 per year. Below are the basic guidelines of filter replacement frequency for the various type of filter:
•          Deep Pleated type = Once or twice a year
•          Ordinary Flat or Pleated = 2-3 Months
•          Traditional Fiberglass/Polyester = Monthly

Tips 24 :
If your car has an air conditioner, make sure its coolant is recovered and recycled whenever you have it serviced. In the United States, leakage from auto air conditioners is the largest single source of emissions of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which damage the ozone layer as well as add to global warming. The CFCs from one auto air conditioner can add the equivalent of 4800 pounds of CO2 emissions per year.

7. Weekly Go Green Tips 3 in 1 ( 11/July/2011 ~ 17/July/2011 ) ~ Pipe Insulation / Dishwasher

Tips 19 :
The washing time involved with a dishwasher is minimal in cost but the drying cycle consumes too much energy and produces poor results. It can be expensive at 1500 watts per cycle. You can turn off the drying cycle manually, instead air dry the dishes or dry them by hand. Not using heat in the drying cycle can save 20 percent of your dishwasher's total electricity use.

Wait until you have a full load of dishes before operating a dishwasher. In most cases, such practice will use less water than washing the same number of dishes by hand. As much as 80 percent of the energy your dishwasher uses goes to heat water (if without count in the drying process). Remember-by saving water, you're also saving the energy used to pump it, treat it, heat it in your home, and clean it up afterwards in your city's waste water facility.

Tips 20 :
Insulate water pipes and slide this on the water lines beginning from your hot water tank’s heater to all hot water valves, ducts, particularly your shower, clothes washer and dishwasher to prevent the heat loss. Use quality pipe insulation wrap, or neatly tape strips of fiberglass insulation around the pipes. Pipe sleeves made with polyethylene or neoprene foam are the most commonly used insulation. It is recommended to use only eco-friendly insulation materials like cork, wool or recycled newspaper or sponge.

Benefits bring by good insulation including:
Save money and good for the environment because insulated pipes can raise water temperature 2ºF–4ºF hotter than non-insulated pipes can deliver, means that less electricity or energy is needed to heat up the water for the same water temperature and also shorten the time taken to get hot water to the tap. Besides, the water in the pipes doesn’t cool down as quickly between uses.

Tips 21 :
When turning on a water faucet or shower, unless you need warm water choose the coolest water setting. Whenever possible, set up a programmable thermostat which is compatible with your heating and cooling system. A programmable thermostat enables adjustment on the times to turn on the heating or cooling according to a pre-set schedule. As a result, you don't operate the equipment as much when you are asleep or when the house is not occupied. Just take care to set it low in the winter and high in the summer.

In the winter, set the thermostat to 68°F while you're awake and set lower while you're asleep or away from home. Experts estimate that by turning down your thermostat 10 to 15 degrees for 8 hours, you can save as much as 15% on your heating bill. In the summer, keeping your house warmer than normal when you are away, and lowering the thermostat setting to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling.

6. Weekly Go Green Tips 3 in 1 ( 04/July/2011 ~ 10/July/2011 ) ~ About Fridge / Travelling

Tips 16 :
Avoid frequent business flights when you can simply stage an online video conference. Flights account for 4% of world's CO2 emissions while online video conferences are almost harmless to the environment. Besides, you will save thousands of pounds every time you do an online conference.

Choose a place to live that reduces the need to drive or easy access to public transit system, easy biking routes, close to work and stores, within walk able community, etc.  If drive is unavoidable, plan your journey well ahead. Get lost in journey means driving extra distance and consuming extra fuel.  Every gallon of gasoline you save avoids 20 pounds of CO2 emissions.

Tips 17 :
For a fringe with a transparent or visible door, view and decide first what thing you are going to take out before opening the door. Avoid from wasting the time in selecting the food/beverage while the fringe door is keep opening. Leaving the fridge door open or frequently opening and closing it will cause the temperature inside to rise, as warm air is being drawn in all the time. This will affect the fringe efficiency to work harder and use up more energy and increased the electricity consumption to lower the temperature back down to its initial reading.

For fridge with non-visible doors, you should learn to organize the contents of your fridge properly so that you know where everything is. This means that when you open the refrigerator door to remove an item, you can go exactly to that place, grab the product and immediately close the door, thus saving time, electricity and money. Attach a paper list of fridge content category on its doors’ external surface is a good idea you can practice. Beside, also try to load your fridge / freezer as quickly as possible to avoid heat exchange with the room.

Tips 18 :
Don't directly place hot and warm item in a fridge. Hot items will raise the interior temperature of the fridge especially if it involves a big amount of storing. The raise of the temperature exposed the storing items at risk of bacteria growth and fridge also has to consume more energy to further cool down the interior temperature to the initial level. The time taken for the fridge to resume to initial temperature level is subject to the how strong the motor of fridge and food volume are. For huge amount of storing items, divide the foods into smaller, individual portions for faster cooling.

It is advisable that cooked foods that need refrigeration should be placed in the refrigerator within 1 hour or so after eating. The longer cooked food is left out at room temperature, “the greater the chance of bacteria multiplying and growing. So, if the food is still hot (like steamboat food), be let the food cool down to the room temperature first within 1 hour before placing it in the fridge. Do covering your foods before place in fridge to avoid the foods odor from cross-contaminated each other. Covered food cools more slowly, so cover it loosely until it chills a bit, then seal it. Place any cooked foods and leftover dishes above raw meat, poultry or seafood.
